The other day I had 220 gb free space now it says 180 gb free. It's supposed to be 320 gb hard drive when I ordered it. Anyway there's no way I have 100gb's of stuff on there. Does anyone know what I can do to check things?

I turned off system restore and restarted and also did a disk cleanup. Should you see the increase of 47gb's or not because I don't.. maybe a few gb's but not 47...The internal workings of a computer are way out of my league...

Do you have System Recovery (System Restore) enabled? Over time that thing its very well known to take HUGE amounts of disk space.

As well as System Restore, check out hibernation too. If you don't use it, turn it off. The hyberfil.sys file it creates can also get quite large.

do you have any unallocated,space?
To see
Go to Start, Control Panel, Performance & Maintenance, Administrative Tools,Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management (Local) and to see what it shows.

note: the in red on some PC's may not be their in that case skip and proceed with (Administrative Tools)

i would be interested in seeing the results of using one of the tools we mentioned to identify the location of the large folders. We could give you more info if that were available. I personally would not disable system restore. It can be a valuable tool in the event of problems.

I have to agree on not disabling system restore it's a lot easier than mucking around in the recovery console and if you do end up in the console it can help sometimes.

Also, there's a better way than disabling hibernation. Lately, I've started to degrag only the most often used files which seems to speed things up plus it's a heck of a lot quicker than doing the drive.

Did away with hibernation. Turned system restore back on after virus scan. (no viruses). Computer management says 288.04gb's 188gb's free 65%. Which tool Phoon? Goo-- Which part of task mgr? Thanks for all the help guys...

I also found that in Vista that if you have system restore enabled it allows Windows to make restore points anytime it wants and they can take up some UNBLELIEVABLE space. There is an option to clean up restore points when you do a Disk Cleanup.

I am not sure if this helps at all Richard but I just wanted to share my bit of information I found.

Emailed you at hotmail.. Somehow I guess it adds up..  102gb's plus 42.7gb's for system restore 145gb's or so from 288 gb's total. I should have about 140 to 150gb's free space and somehow I have more 187 gb's, oh well.. Thought there was a problem guess not, sorry everyone. It just seemed like a few days ago I had over 220gb's free.. Thanks again..
