Is there a way to speed up rendering without getting a new computer? I asked the guy at dell If I could install different (better) processor but he said they don't recommend it.,. Any ideas?

Just make sure that what you use as far as software supports 64 bit and your better off with 64 bit, no two ways about it.

I love seeing these 3D discussions on WC.

Good luck with the new rig, Richard.

You can run 32 bit programs under 64 bit Windows. However, you are stuck with 2GB address space per 32 bit program. You do need 64 bit drivers for your hardware. 16 bit won't work, including 32 bit programs packaged in 16 bit installers.

I have an 8GB system...

Having a 64bit OS is useful if you need the extra memory to run very memory intensive apps or multiple applications which have heavy use.

For games it makes no difference.

With a Quad-core what you will find is the PC running multiple apps will perform much better, but running just 1 or 2 apps won't show much difference.

A word of advice, very few motherboard makers have properly tested 8GB if you are going to build a PC yourself choose a comnibation of OS, MB & memory that others have confirmed works.

Thanks everyone--the system is already being made by Dell, had good luck with them so..They say everything on it is compatible with 64 bit but they don't provide any kind of help on 64 bit system only 32...I shouldn't need any help with it if I have a question I'll just ask you guys, thanks..

Also does it matter if I install 32-bit apps after the 64-bit is on system or does it matter?

You should have no problems running your 32 bit apps.
One thing, if your 32 bit app has a 16 bit installer you will not be able to install the program. 16bit programs will not run on a 64bit system.
You may be able to install them on a 32 bit system and copy the program over to your 64 bit system but if the program writes to the regestry during install you will run into trouble. Mostly the only programs that have 16 bit installers are old and out of date anyway.

You can check here if you have a program your unsure about.

Windows XP 64 has Program Files and Program Files (x86). The second is where 32 bit apps are installed. Vista 64 bit would be similar. The only program that I have, that is installed in Program Files, is Vue 6 Infinite 64 bit. Everything else is in Program Files (x86).

You can install 32 bit and 64 bit apps in any order you want. I have Vue 6 Pro Studio installed and Vue 6 Infinite installed in XP64. V6PS was a free upgrade from V5PS. After upgrading from 6PS to 6I, I can only upgrade to Infinite or xStream.

for some reason nobody has asked this and it's probably the most valid question.
A. What are you rendering?
B. What are your current render times?

Thanks very much guys & for the link CarGuy1, very helpful, thanks..I'd like to try vue 6 infinite I have Vue 6 but the step up would cost a pretty penney. I just don't know if I'd use it enough.. Do you know of a better price than the $500.00 it would cost to upgrade?

It's that Bergs wallpaper I 've done in Vue 6. It will only let me go as big as 1440 x 900 any bigger and it says out of memory. I guess the 4 gb's of memory just isn't enough.. I've stopped every process I could and tried but it still won't go.. I like it the way it is and don't really want to change any materials. I think it's the water material & the iceberg material, translucency and some reflectiveness. The sky is just standard So I'm getting the new computer and hope it will help.. Not just that other things as well..When it rendered it only took a half hour or a liitle more..

One way would be to save the scene, close Vue, load Vue, load scene and render.
